BEGINNER'S GUIDE

What is padel?

Complete guide for beginners. What padel is, how to play it, why it's so popular and how to start in Riga?
Padel is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. It combines elements of tennis and squash but is much easier to learn. You play in doubles on a smaller court with glass and metal walls, which makes the game dynamic and unpredictable.
Padel originated in Mexico in 1969 when Enrique Corcuera built the first padel court in his backyard. Since then the sport has become especially popular in Spain, Argentina and Sweden, and is now rapidly spreading in Latvia.
What padel courts look like?
A padel court is 20m x 10m, roughly a third of the size of a tennis court. The court is enclosed by glass walls (at the back) and metal fencing (on the sides). The net is lower than in tennis. The surface is usually artificial turf or terracotta.

How to play padel?
Padel is always played in doubles (2 vs 2). The game starts with an underhand serve. The ball can bounce off the walls, which makes the game unique and exciting.

Basic rules

  •  Always played in doubles (2 vs 2)
  • Serving is done underhand, diagonally
  • The ball must bounce on the floor before hitting a wall
  • Players can use the walls on their own side
  • Scoring is the same as in tennis (15, 30, 40, game)
  • A match usually consists of 3 sets
No prior experience?
That's completely normal. Most padel players start with zero experience. You can learn the basics in one session. Mosh Club coaches have special experience working with beginners.
Why is padel so popular?

Easy to learn
Unlike tennis, you can learn the padel basics in 30 minutes. A smaller court means less running, and the walls help keep the ball in play.

Social sport
Padel is always played in doubles. That makes it an ideal activity for friends, colleagues and families. After the game, grab a coffee or burger together.

Suitable for all ages
From 8 to 80 years old. Padel is gentle on joints but intense enough to be a great workout. Everyone can play at their own pace.
